Leaving from the village of Giaredo, just outside
Pontremoli, we walk along the banks of the Gordana River to the Straits of
Giaredo canyon. The ravine was formed during the Quaternary period by changing
sea levels, tectonic movements and water erosion. The resulting vertical sides
are formed of polychrome schist, hard sandstone, flint limestone, Tuscan jasper
and chalk. In some areas, the gorge narrows letting us touch both sides.
Whether walking or swimming (depending on the level of the water) this is a
wonderful adventure between rocks and little waterfalls. The Gordana river valley is a site of Community
Interest and part of the Bioitaly project.
Note: The best time to visit the Straits is between
the middle of Spring and the end of August on a hot day as it can be quite cool
inside the canyon. Also information must be sought beforehand on water levels
and reservoir activity further up. If the water level is adequate it’s a great
idea to swim through the ravine using a wet suit and mask.
Equipment: A change of clothes, shoes or sandals that
can be used in the water or for swimming, cagoule or similar, towel or
bathrobe.
Duration: Half day
Difficulty: E+ (must know how to swim)
N.B. The guide may be able to provide some of the
necessary kit, e.g. shoes, raincoats, lifebelts.
